Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say early analysis indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important official stated the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
