The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
