Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
